Leonhard Culmann

Education

He attended schools in Halle, Dinkelsbühl, Nuremberg, Saalfeld and studied in Erfurt and Leipzig.

Work

A teacher at a cathedral school in Bamberg; later involved with churches and schools in Ansbach and Nuremberg where – from 1549 – he was a preacher at St. Sebaldus’ Church. He advocated Andreas Osiander’s doctrine. He was forced to take a leave of absence when he refused to sign a document drafted by Melanchton, who came to Nuremberg in 1555. On Johann Brenz’s recommendation, he was given a parish position in Wiesensteig. Warned by Brenz, he left for the parish of Bernstadt (near Ulm). A theologist, playwright, author of Latin study books, including a grammar book based on Donatus’ Ars minor (1st ed. 1534).
