Erazm Rykaczewski

A son of Józef and Marianna née Rutkowska (Konstancja née Dembińska).

He attended the Kremenets High School and Vilnius University where he studied history and modern and ancient languages, among others, Latin, French, English and Italian. He was taught by Joachim Lelewel and Godfryd Ernest Groddeck.

After the November Uprising, he emigrated to France, and later Scotland. He wrote an English-Polish and Polish-English dictionary and English grammar book intended for Polish emigrants, as well as an Italian dictionary and grammar book. He translated from a number of languages. His translations include Walter Scott’s “Kenilworth” and Cicero’s writings. In addition to grammatical and lexicographic research, he was also interested in historical editing. He took active part in political and teaching activities abroad, taught at the Polish School in Batignolles. A member of the Historical and Literary Society in Paris. He spent the last years of his life in the Wielkopolska region.
