Franciszek Ksawery Malinowski

Descent

A son of the Mayor of Golub Franciszek Malinowski and Dorota née Behm.

Education

He began his education at the Bernardine school in Skępe where he was offered an apprenticeship at a pharmacy. However, he did not take to this line of work. He continued education in schools in Żuromin and Płock and the Piarist Middle School in Warsaw. After his father died, Malinowski enrolled at a theological college, and in 1838 he was ordained as a priest.

Work

When the November Uprising broke out, he dropped out of the theological college and joined the insurgents. After his ordination, he became a parish priest in Wałdowo. There, he began working in the community, for instance, together with a team of other people, he established the Educational Support Society in West Prussia and the Agricultural Society. In addition to his community and church work, F. Malinowski also had an academic career in linguistics. He published several linguistic works on phonetics, among other subjects. The most prominent of his achievements in the academic field was the publication of Krytyczno-porównawcza gramatyka języka polskiego z dzisiejszego stanowiska lingwistyki porównawczej (A Critical and Comparative Analysis of Polish Grammar from the Perspective of Contemporary Comparative Linguistics) (1869–1870).
